Application for grant

To apply for a grant of representation you need to find out if there is a will, obtain values of assets and liabilities at date of death, complete the appropriate inheritance tax return and prepare and submit the application to the Probate Registry.

Benefits of instructing Julie West Solicitors

You do not need a solicitor to make an application for the grant. It is possible to make a personal application direct to the Probate Registry.

However, in order to limit personal liability, it is important that the personal representative gets it right at every stage. Reduce the risk, hassle and speed things up by instructing an experienced solicitor to help you.

By appointing one of our solicitors you will receive expert advice tailored to your situation and the assets in the estate. We work hard to make the process as painless as possible for you, including keeping our advice friendly, approachable, simple and free from jargon.

With JWS there is a pervading sense of trust

How it works

Process

Once you have made contact with us, spoken with your solicitor and decided to go ahead we will send you our welcome pack of paperwork to complete and return.

We will ask you questions about the estate and let you know which type of inheritance tax return will be needed and whether there will be any tax to pay.

meetings

You will always be asked if you would like to meet your solicitor.  Although a meeting is not a prerequisite to making the application, if you have the time, we think meeting your solicitor face to face is of great benefit.

Your solicitor may be able to offer you an appointment out of usual office hours if it helps you.  Our meeting room and client facilities have level access.  Our allocated office parking is right outside the office door.  If you are unable to make it to our office, your solicitor will come and see you at home.

Timescale

Taking into account the time it takes for HM Revenue and Customs to return the receipt for the inheritance tax return, you can expect to have the grant within three months of your first contact with us.

Law Society Wills and Inheritance Quality Scheme (WIQS)

Our specialist solicitors are accredited under WIQS. The Law Society launched the WIQS scheme to help consumers make an informed decision about who to instruct to assist them with their wills and probate advice.

The primary aim of the scheme is to help the public avoid advisers that are unregulated, uninsured and untrained.

Achieving the WIQS accreditation shows that we follow best practice procedures to meet the highest standards of technical expertise and client service in providing tailored wills and probate advice to our clients.
